Terrace Gardening also called a roof garden,it is a garden in which vegetables, fruits or flowers are grown on terraces, balconies or roofs of buildings. The kitchen garden, a standard in every Indian household, has now shifted to the roof due to constraints of space, and is called a terrace garden.
Objectives
- Reduce overall heat absorption of buildings and insulate the building against heat & cold.
- The convenience of safe, pesticide-free, healthy green and fresh fruits or vegetables.
- Conducive to a regular of physical exercise, clean air and being close to nature.
- Terrace garden increases the amount of oxygen in the air.

Key points to remember for a sustainable terrace garden
- The terrace garden will be an organic demonstration garden.
- A terrace garden We will create a garden that promotes wildlife and biodiversity.
- Inputs use in garden should be locally home made
- the garden from outside and minimize the waste we produce by reusing and recycling and growing a range of useful non food plants alongside fruit and vegetables.
- We will recycle all organic waste within the garden, composting and reusing where possible.
- There must be adoption of solar energy (Renewable) resources
- Drip or mini sprinkler should be part of irrigation management to avoid excess moisture to plants
- Second hand or recycled goods should be used.
- Source locally, buying from local independent nurseries and farms and using local professionals and craftspeople.
- A proper drainage should be given on roof to avoid leakages. A good Water proof material can be used.
- Use homemade Bio manure, Bio growth promoters and Bio insecticides for plants.
- We will engage with the local community and seek their involvement in all stages of the garden’s progress. The garden should provide a place for the local community to grow food, meet, enjoy and learn new skills.
- We will seek to use the garden to improve the quality of life, confidence, skills and knowledge of as wide a range of our community as possible including those who are most vulnerable or often excluded for whatever reason.
- We will seek to use the garden to promote the key messages of the Transition movement.
- The above principles and the way in which we manage the garden will be the vehicle by which we can encourage all in our community to learn about and rise to the challenges that are being posed by climate change and our diminishing fossil fuel supplies.
- The garden will provide the opportunity for all those involved to learn about the importance of, and take an active part in, local food production, healthy eating and community action.
